Getting a Tattoo in Lisbon: Everything You Need to Know

Planning to get tattooed in Lisbon? Good call. The city has a legitimate tattoo scene—and if you know where to look, you can find artists doing genuinely excellent work. This guide covers everything worth knowing: how to pick the right artist, what tattoos cost in Portugal, which styles are worth the trip, and what actually happens from booking to aftercare.

We’re Cacilhas Tattoo Studio, based just across the river from Lisbon in Cacilhas. We work in realism, fine line, full-color, Japanese, blackwork, geometric, old school, neotraditional, and more. If you’re weighing your options, read on—this is the kind of guide we wish existed when we started.

How to Find a Good Tattoo Artist in Lisbon (and Not Regret It)

Don’t book the first studio you find on Google Maps. Lisbon has a lot of studios—quality varies wildly. Here’s what actually separates good artists from the rest:

01

Portfolio depth over breadth

Any artist worth your skin will have 20–30 healed pieces online, not just fresh photos. Fresh tattoos always look sharper than they settle. Look for healed work in the style you want.

02

Specialization matters

A realism artist who also does “all styles” is usually average at most of them. Find someone whose portfolio is 80% the style you want—portraits, Japanese, fine line, or geometric.

03

Consultation before commitment

Reputable studios talk through your design before you pay a deposit. If someone quotes you without seeing a reference or discussing placement, walk away.

04

Reviews reveal the experience

Look for mentions of communication, cleanliness, and how the artist handled reworks or touch-ups. That’s how you see how a studio treats clients long-term.

At Cacilhas Tattoo, we work by consultation. You bring your idea, we talk through what works, and we don’t start until you’re confident in the design.

How Much Do Tattoos Cost in Portugal?

Studio minimum
0
Simple small flash—a realistic starting point for a quality professional tattoo.
Red flag price

If someone quotes you this for a detailed piece, that’s a red flag, not a deal.

Pricing depends on the artist’s experience, session length, and design complexity—not just size. A small realism portrait takes longer than a large geometric pattern. At Cacilhas Tattoo, we quote based on your specific design after consultation. We don’t do vague per-hour rates that leave you guessing.

Walk-In Tattoos in Lisbon: Can You Get Tattooed Without Booking?

Most Lisbon studios work primarily by appointment, but walk-ins are possible when artists have open slots. At our studio, we accept walk-ins. Here’s how it works in practice:

Weekday afternoons are the best time for a walk-in. Weekends, especially in tourist season (April–October), studios fill up fast.

Walk-ins work better for simpler designs. Custom or large-scale work needs a proper consultation regardless—but it’s totally doable.

Visiting and want something spontaneous? We’ll do our best to find you an available artist—even when the whole studio is fully booked.

Tattoo Styles Popular in Lisbon Right Now

Lisbon’s scene skews toward fine line and realism. Here’s a breakdown of the main styles and who they’re for:

Realism

Portraits, nature, animals rendered with photographic detail. Time-intensive, technically demanding. Portfolio should be mostly realism—not someone who lists it alongside six other styles.

Fine Line

Delicate, precise, minimal. Popular with first-timers. Fades more than bold lines—placement and aftercare matter a lot here.

Full-Color

Bold, saturated designs. Floral, illustrative, neo-traditional. Takes longer to heal and needs SPF protection to stay vibrant.

Japanese

Strong outlines, flat color fills, iconic imagery. Scales beautifully for sleeves and back pieces. Not a style for small placements.

Blackwork

Bold black ink, heavy fills, dotwork and stippling. Striking on any skin tone. Ages exceptionally well—no color to fade.

Geometric

Precise lines, patterns, sacred geometry. Clean, modern, architectural. Works on almost any placement and ages beautifully.

Old School

Bold outlines, flat colors, classic American imagery. Ships, daggers, roses, swallows. Timeless—heals clean and ages beautifully.

Neotraditional

Richer detail and color palette than classic traditional. More illustrative and ornamental. Bridges classic and contemporary—works well at medium to large scale.

We work across all of these at Cacilhas Tattoo—but we’ll tell you if your idea suits a different studio’s specialty better. That’s just how good consultations work.

What Happens During Your Tattoo Appointment

Before
  • Eat a proper meal. Hydrate.
  • Avoid alcohol the night before.
  • Bring references and any questions.
At the Studio
  • Area cleaned, shaved, stencil applied.
  • Placement confirmed before starting.
  • Say something if anything feels off.
During
  • Breaks are normal. Long sessions need them.
  • Pain varies by placement—ribs, spine, and knees are tough. Inner arm and outer thigh are more manageable.
After
  • Tattoo wrapped by your artist.
  • Aftercare instructions provided. Follow them exactly.
  • First two weeks determine how the tattoo heals.

Tattoo Aftercare: What Actually Matters

Keep it clean.

Wash gently twice a day with unscented soap. Pat dry—don’t rub.

Moisturize lightly.

A thin layer of unscented lotion or tattoo balm. Not a thick coat—the skin needs to breathe.

No direct sun for 4 weeks.

Sun exposure ruins tattoos. After healing, SPF 50 every time it’s exposed. Especially relevant if you’re visiting Portugal in summer.

No soaking for 2–3 weeks.

That means pools, sea, baths. Showers are fine.

Don’t pick.

Peeling is normal. Scratching or picking pulls out ink and creates uneven patches that require touch-ups.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a tattoo cost at Cacilhas Tattoo?

Tattoo prices depend on the design, size, placement, style and level of detail. Small simple tattoos usually start around €60–€100, but custom work is quoted after we understand the idea properly. Send us your reference, size and placement, and we’ll give you a realistic estimate.

Can I walk in without an appointment?

Yes, walk-ins are welcome when we have availability. Small warning from the tattoo gods: message us first if you can. Some days are busy, and arriving without checking may mean waiting or coming back another day.

How do I book a consultation?

Contact us through our website, Instagram, WhatsApp or phone. Consultations are free and usually take around 20–30 minutes. We’ll talk about your idea, placement, size, style, references, price and the best artist for the project.

Do you do custom tattoos?

Yes. You can bring your own idea, references, sketch, chaotic Pinterest folder or vague “I know the feeling but not the design” concept. Our artists can help turn it into a tattoo that actually works on the body.

Do you do touch-ups?

Yes. Touch-ups on tattoos done at our studio are free within the first 3 months, as long as you followed the aftercare instructions. If the tattoo healed badly because of sun, scratching, or swimming too early, we’ll still help—but it may not count as a free touch-up.

Do you do piercings?

Yes. We do professional piercings with sterile equipment and titanium jewelry. Common piercing prices:

Nostril€40
Septum€45
Eyebrow€45
Medusa€45
Monroe€45
Labret€40
Navel€45
Nipple€40
Surface / Microdermal€50

Not sure which piercing you want? Message us and we’ll help you choose the right placement.

Do you use safe jewelry?

Yes. We work with high-quality titanium jewelry and sterile single-use materials. We’ll also explain aftercare properly—because a good piercing is not just the hole. It’s the healing too.

Do you speak English and Portuguese?

Yes. We serve clients in English and Portuguese. Tourists, locals, expats and nervous first-timers are all welcome.

How can I book?

Message us through the website, Instagram, WhatsApp or phone. Send the idea, placement, approximate size and any references you have. We’ll reply as soon as possible—usually the same day.

Ready to book, or just curious?

Message us through the website, Instagram, or WhatsApp. We usually reply the same day. Walk-ins also welcome—come say hello.
